The Guide
Why Walk First, Then Punt
The river shows you the colleges' backs. The walk shows you their fronts, their courts and the stories behind them.
The Cambridge walk and punt tour is Alumni Tours’ three-hour combination: about 1.5 hours on foot through the colleges with a graduate or current student, then a 45-minute chauffeured punt along the Backs. It is sold as the Cambridge Walk & Punt Tour by Alumni, from US$74 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 from 483 reviews, with entry to King’s College Chapel as an option.

What the walk covers
The walk starts at King’s College and takes in the Corpus Clock, the Eagle, the pub where the structure of DNA was announced, the Old Cavendish Laboratory, Queens’ College, the Backs, Trinity and St John’s, with stories of student life from people who lived it. Guides come from many backgrounds, so expect a range of accents. It is a moderate pace for about an hour and a half, with no restroom stops, and the streets are full of bicycles. Indoor access is not included unless you book the King’s College Chapel option, which takes you inside the chapel with its fan-vaulted ceiling.
Then the punt
After the walk a local chauffeur takes you on the river for 45 minutes. You now know what you are looking at: the backs of the same colleges you saw from the front, the Mathematical Bridge at Queens’ and the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s. That is the case for the combination over a punt on its own.
If you only want the punt
The same company sells the punt alone: Alumni Tours’ Guided Punting Tour on the River Cam is from US$40 a person, 45 minutes from Scudamore’s Mill Lane station. The cheapest seat on the river is Rutherford’s shared punt, from US$22 a person.

What Walk and Punt Guests Say
"lucy is a fantastic tour guide! really nice experience with such a lovely person. thank you!"
"Roderick is really friendly and told us a lot about the history about the university of Cambridge. Everything was explained clearly, from the stunning architecture to the student traditions. The campus is incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and steeped in history. Really good experience."
"Our tour guide did such an amazing job, it was clear that he was really passionate about telling us all of those stories! It was an amazing experience, I usually don’t like tours as I see them as boring and a waste of money as I don’t remember much of the information later, but this was different - I would recommend it to anyone!"
"Alice was my guide and she's professional providing us the history of Cambridge and story of campus buildings. Love to hear her sharing the life in Cambridge. Unfortunately it's raining, otherwise the punt would be more wonderful experience to see around those famous colleges (via river) which won't be open for the visitors."
"We thoroughly enjoyed Naimh’s relaxed, friendly and knowledgable style presenting lots of fascinating info. It was a most enjoyable day, one that we will definitely recommend to friends. Many thanks."
"Brilliant guide who spoke well, provided enough detail without being boring and keep the group moving. Thank you for a memorable tour. Loved the history!!!"
"The tour was great! It was a great insight to the college sights and the history behind them. Stephen was brilliant and made the experience all the more enjoyable."
